If you are weary from your travels and need a place to unwind in a calm and gracious setting reminiscent of the past, The Summerhouse is for you. It is nestled in the hamlet of Hartwick, New York, only a 10 minute drive from the attractions of Cooperstown through open meadows, quiet shaded woods and farmland. The Summerhouse offers warm and peaceful accommodations. This spacious country home is a welcome retreat.
Built in 1836, The Summerhouse maintains the style as it would have been found in yesteryear. The house has an outward appearance of a gracious Greek Revival and the interior overflows with a Victorian flair. There is no doubt it will be hard to resist the welcoming appeal of The Summerhouse to any traveler. The original nineteenth century architecture and features of times past are still prevalent. Hand carved moldings and attention to details are reflective of the craftsmanship of that time. The spiral staircase catches the sunlight as it drifts down from the skylight on the third floor. The tin ceilings found both in the formal dining room and bath will catch your eye. The built-in ice box in the walk-through butler's pantry will stir your curiosity. The guest rooms offer privacy from the rest of the house where large windows catch the last summer light. The semi-private bath is at the end of the hall. After you have settled in and freshened up you will forget about the hurried day you had. A private sitting room is provided for our guest's use which boasts a TV and wireless Internet access for your enjoyment. However, you may find you'll soon forget about your modern day gadgets. The view from the windows will draw you outside to enjoy a refreshing drink in the glow of gas lights on the porch of the garden house. You won't be able to resist a walk through the perennial gardens as you feel the stress flowing from your body. After a good night's rest, plan your day relaxing on the sun porch surrounded in a décor suggestive of the outside gardens or start your morning with a hearty breakfast while basking in the morning sun on the deck. When you need a place to relax, let The Summerhouse be your refuge.
